Frequently Asked Questions

SongRank is a fun, interactive tool that helps you discover your true favorite songs! Log in with your Spotify account, pick an artist or playlist, and we'll walk you through a series of head-to-head matchups until your personal ranking is complete. Think of it like a bracket tournament for your music taste.

Once you pick an artist or playlist, SongRank will show you two songs at a time and ask you to choose which one you like more. Behind the scenes, we use a merge-sort algorithm to figure out your full ranking with as few comparisons as possible. You can even pause and come back later — your progress is saved automatically.

You can rank an entire artist's discography, a portion of it or any custom public playlist from your Spotify library or anyone on Spotify. Just search for the artist or select a playlist, choose which tracks to include, and start ranking! Rankings also support Audio Books, Podcast Episodes, etc.

We collect your Spotify User Account ID, Spotify Display Name, Spotify Avatar and Spotify email address. These are all collected to allow Song Rank to make requests to spotify on your behalf, and for your SongRank profile. We cannot and never access your private listening history, and we never modify anything on your Spotify account.

TL;DR - No, SongRank does not run ads or offer any premium features.

Here's Why:

SongRank is built on top of the Spotify Web API, which means it must comply with Spotify's Developer Policy and Developer Terms.

As a Non-Streaming SDA (an app that uses Spotify data but doesn't play music), SongRank is technically permitted to run ads or charge for access under Spotify's current policy (Developer Policy, Section IV). However, the restrictions around how that monetization can work make it impractical for an app like SongRank.

What the policy says

  • Ads cannot appear alongside Spotify content. Any page displaying Spotify assets — artist images, album art, track names, or any other metadata pulled from the API — cannot be monetized with advertising.

  • No Spotify data in ad targeting. The Developer Terms prohibit transferring any data received from Spotify — including aggregate or anonymous data — to any ad network, ad exchange, data broker, or monetization-related toolset.

  • Spotify can revoke access at any time. Even with Extended Quota approval, Spotify reviews apps on an ongoing basis and can disable access if they determine an app violates their policies (Compliance Tips). With this policy in mind.

Essentially, the risk of having Spotify pull the plug on us is not worth a couple bucks a month from Ads to help me out. If you like SongRank and would like to support us, please visit the support page.
